We want to start by saying thank you to our live band. (wait for applause) They are all members of our Waverly Belmont Family, here to help us make our celebration extra special.

All Around the world people are celebrating the holidays in different ways with family and friends.

Today we want to share what we have learned. Through music we will travel the globe to understand how people celebrate this season.

Jewish people throughout the world celebrate Hanukkah - During Hanukkah, Jewish children play a game called Dreidel.

2.2 Alijah

A dreidel is a four sided spinning top with a Hebrew letter on each side. If it falls over on the letter you chose, you might win a coin.

And the answer is, it's time for the newest of our holidays - Kwanzaa!

Slavery was a horrible time in History. People were ripped away from their homeland and taken to a new continent. 

3.4 Eliza

During slavery in the Americas, many people from African countries lost their culture and traditions.  

3.5 Ray 

In the 1960s, Dr. Maulana Kerenga created a holiday to restore traditions from Africa. That holiday is called, “Kwanzaa”. 

3.6  Eli  

Kwanzaa is celebrated for 7 days, from December 26th to January 1st. Each day represents one of 7 principles.

3.7  Penny

The 2nd graders will share the 7 principles of Kwanzaa in this Kwanzaa song.

Mary’s tummy was big with baby Jesus. He was ready to be born into the world. But they were far from home.

There was no room for them, so they had to stay in a stable with the horses.

In many countries, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are very important days to celebrate.

Japanese people call them Omisoka and Oshogatsu.

It is a time to reflect on the past year and to invite divine help for the new one.

People clean their houses and take long baths. Sometimes people share bowls of Udon noodles.

There is a singing competition and people all over the country watch the stars come out! Tonight, we have a musical superstar of our own who will help us sing a famous Japanese song.
